Success Story: Isuka Primary School
FODEO's mission is to build the capacity of the Tanzanian community to understand and address their developmental challenges by using existing resources in collaboration with different stakeholders.
Background Of Isuka Primary
Isuka Primary School, located in the Busega district of Nyashimo ward, faced a significant challenge: its classrooms were deemed unsafe and dangerous, forcing pupils to study outdoors under trees. This inadequate learning environment posed a barrier to the educational success of children aged 6 to 10.
FODEO's Intervention
In response to a request from the school's headteacher, FODEO, a non-governmental organization dedicated to empowering communities, stepped in to address the issue of the dilapidated classrooms. Recognizing the importance of community engagement and collaboration, FODEO partnered with village leaders to organize public meetings and raise awareness about the urgent need to improve the school's infrastructure.
Community Mobilization and Resource Sharing
Through capacity-building efforts, FODEO empowered community members to take ownership of their children's education. Inspired by a sense of responsibility and motivated by the desire to see their children succeed, the community rallied together to initiate a fundraising campaign. Each household contributed Tshs 10,000, and additional donations of sand and stones were made to support the foundation construction.
Collaboration and Funding
FODEO recognized the need for additional resources to complete the classroom construction project. With its expertise in partnerships and resource mobilization, FODEO successfully secured funding from Tanzania Development Trust (TDT), a UK-based charity. TDT's generous contribution of £6,000, equivalent to Tshs 15,000,000, enabled the upgrading of the classrooms and completion of plastering work.
Success and Ongoing Efforts
The collaborative efforts of FODEO, village leaders, and the community resulted in the completion of two new classrooms in December 2022. Today, Isuka Primary School's pupils can enjoy a safe and conducive learning environment, fostering their academic growth and preparing them for future success. While significant progress has been made, Isuka Primary School still requires an additional three classrooms to accommodate its growing student population. FODEO continues to actively engage with various stakeholders, seeking support from organizations and individuals committed to improving the educational opportunities for children in rural communities.
Key Takeaways
The success of Isuka Primary School's classroom construction project highlights the power of community mobilization, collaboration, and resource sharing. By working together, communities can overcome challenges and create a brighter future for their children. FODEO's role in facilitating these efforts demonstrates the effectiveness of non-governmental organizations in empowering communities and fostering sustainable development.
