Empowering Communities for Better Health
Foundation for Development Organization (FODEO) is a Tanzanian non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women, adolescents, and young women (AGYW) and children, particularly in rural areas. Through its comprehensive health program, FODEO works to address critical health challenges and empower communities to take charge of their health.
Tackling Health Disparities
FODEO's health program focuses on addressing key health issues that disproportionately affect women and children in rural Tanzania. These issues include:
- Maternal Health: High maternal mortality rates, limited access to skilled birth attendance, and inadequate postpartum care.
- Reproductive Health: High unmet need for family planning, high teenage pregnancy rates, and limited access to contraception.
- Child Health: High child mortality rates, limited access to immunization and preventive care, and prevalence of preventable diseases.
- HIV/AIDS: High prevalence of HIV/AIDS, limited access to testing and treatment, and stigma associated with the disease.
- Gender-Based Violence: Widespread gender-based violence, especially against women and girls, and lack of support services for survivors.
- Adolescent Health: Unique health challenges faced by adolescents, including early pregnancy, malnutrition, and mental health problems.
Empowering Communities through Social Accountability
FODEO's approach to improving health goes beyond providing direct services. The organization utilizes a unique Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM) approach, empowering communities to demand better health services from their leaders and hold them accountable for their promises.
Through SAM, FODEO trains and supports community members to:
- Identify and understand health challenges in their communities.
- Collect and analyze data on service delivery.
- Advocate for improvements in service delivery.
- Hold their leaders accountable for their promises.
This participatory approach fosters community ownership of the health agenda and ensures that services are responsive to the needs of the people they serve.

FODEO's work is making a significant impact on the lives of women and children in rural Tanzania. The organization's efforts have contributed to:
- Increased access to quality maternal and child health services.
